Hotel We Love: Point A London Shoreditch

Sleek minimalism characterises this hotel in the heart of a vibrant London neighbourhood.

The colourful mural in the lobby of Point A Hotel London Shoreditch is perfect for an urban skate park or a hip café – the kind that sells matcha lattes. If that – plus the free digital jukebox – doesn’t give you the cool factor of this hotel, then nothing will.

History

Point A Hotel London Shoreditch is one of the newest members of the Point A family, which includes six hotels in London and one in Glasgow, with several more London hotels in the pipeline. The company’s calling card is offering better value for money and reasonable, if not incredible, prices for centrally located accommodation. Security is paramount here, and keycards are required for after-hours access to the corridors and lifts, as well as the main entrance, a large glass façade.

Quart

The hotel has 181 rooms, ranging from standard doubles and twins to accessible doubles and twins, all decorated with colourful Shoreditch-style murals. (The disabled ones are more standard, but have no windows.) The rooms are small – 86 to 129 square feet – but given the efficient use of space, it’s almost easy to forget the compact size of the room. There’s a fold-out desk with a folding chair and a lamp that shines directly above it; shelves are strategically placed away from the street. Hooks in the room are an alternative to cupboards. Amenities add to the room’s modern feel: a 40-inch flat-screen smart TV, fast free Wi-Fi and touchpad-controlled mood lighting that changes colour and intensity. It also has all the standard amenities: air conditioning, safes, bedside USB ports, blackout curtains and power showers. The hotel has an ironing room on the first floor.

district

The hotel is located in the heart of Shoreditch, one of London’s trendiest neighbourhoods, with a patchwork of cafes, pubs, music venues and convenience stores, as well as Bunhill Fields, a beautiful, large park with ancient tombs. It is a short walk from Old Street tube station (Northern line) and about ten minutes from several others – Liverpool Street (Central, Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines) and Moorgate (Circle, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City and Northern lines). . Nearby restaurants include Thai, Indian and Italian.

Grocery stores

Breakfast or ‘brekkie’ is available from 9am in the lobby lounge or as a takeaway. Guests can choose from fresh pastries, fresh fruit, muesli and yoghurts as well as a gluten-free selection. (There is no kitchen for hot meals.) A suitcase in the lobby is filled with snacks, juices and soft drinks and is available at all times. Espresso drinks can also be ordered 24 hours a day.
